Ecuador: Bus taken over by assailants carrying submachine guns near Challuabamba

Elcomerico.com reported that armed assailants assaulted passengers on an inter-provincial bus traveling on the Quito-Cuenca-Loja route at 23:00 hours. Passengers reported, the Santa cooperativa bus line picked up three passengers the bus terminal located in Azogues. At about ten minutes after departing, one of the passengers picked up in Azogues approached the driver and pointed a weapon at him and the copilot. The assailant ordered the driver not to stop the bus. Two other armed assailants then stole items from passengers. The bulk of the items taken were documents, money, watches, and cell phones Two of the passengers were pistol-whipped when they resisted the assault. The thieves exited the bus in Challuabamba. There were 45 passengers on board. Some of the witnesses cited low security at the terminal in Azogues and negligence of the bus drivers
