At least 35 people have been shot dead in a two-day wave of killings in the Amazon city of Manaus, amid suspicion that police officers may have gone on a rampage to avenge a murdered colleague. Investigators in the city, where England played their opening World Cup match last year, refused to rule out the possibility that rogue officers were behind the attacks.

Suspicion also fell on gangs who have fought turf battles over cocaine-smuggling routes. The killings began on Friday after a police sergeant ws shot dead outside a bank from which he had just withdrawn 12,000 pounds.
